When requesting a quote for design work, you will need to consider the following. It's not critical that you know all the details prior to requesting a quote, but the more information you can provide, the better:
For print design
- Size of item - width and height measurements in millimetres (or "A" size)
- Number of pages - remember that a leaf or sheet of paper has 2 "pages"
- Printing - is the item going to be printed litho (professional printing press), digital (professional digital press) or desktop (in-house laser or inkjet printer)
- Paper - are you printing on coated or uncoated paper, and how thick or thin is it?
- Corporate Identity Elements - what branding do you require? Usually your logo, in a specific location and size, or maybe you have a particular background colour, or swoosh at the bottom of the page
- Fonts/typefaces - do you have an existing corporate typeface that you use for all items, or are you happy for me to choose for you.
- Content - This includes the title (details of a promotion or a eye-catching statement), and text that makes up the body copy of your item. This doesn't have to finalised as quite often the design of an item can influence the text you use.
- Images - are there specific images you want in the design, else provide descriptions of the sorts of images you would like, so I can source or create them.
- The tone - are you looking for something fun and light-hearted or perhaps you prefer to leave a serious impression.
- Any other items to include in the design
For web design
For online design, it is quite often the case that you are not sure of your requirements. No problem, if can supply some of the info below, that would help, but it's not critical:
- Do you already have a domain name?
- Do you already have a web host (web server space on which your site is hosted)?
- Number of pages for a website (or dimensions in pixels if you want a banner ad)
- Navigation menu items (this just helps you understand how all your pages will link together)
- Corporate Identity Elements - Usually your logo, in a specific location and size, or maybe you have a particular background colour, or swoosh at the bottom of a page
- Content - the titles and copy/text that will fill each page. Bear in mind that I will tweak your text to improve SEO (search engine optimization).
- Images - are there specific images you want in the design, else provide descriptions of the sorts of images you would like, so I can source or create them.
- The tone - are you looking for something serious and hard-hitting or perhaps something fresh and friendly?
- Any other items to include in the design
Don't worry if the above sounds rigid or clinical, it's simply for devising a quote. Rest assured, the end-product will be a professional, eye-catching design.
